OnSpeed - Internet Accelerator Service
Manufacturer`s Description:
OnSpeed is the solution for millions of internet users who are frustrated by having a slow internet connection. It`s a quick, easy software download, which speeds up all dial-up internet connections by up to 5 times, putting it well within broadband territory. And if you`ve got broadband, you can expect pages to download 3 times faster with OnSpeed.
OnSpeed uses patented compression technology that reduces the size of web pages instantly, meaning there`s less to download. Less to download means faster. Much faster.

Our Review:
Coming from a technical background, I`m always very skeptical of these software downloads that promise to speed up your Internet connection. Most applications of the past merely tweaked a few Windows dialup networking settings -- in the hope of ekeing a little more performance from your modem. However, OnSpeed is different.
How does it work?
Rather than try and configure your computer for optimum connection speed -- OnSpeed takes a rather different approach. OnSpeed actually downloads the data for you, then passes a compressed version of that data on to your computer. This is all managed by a browser plugin -- and OnSpeed now supports all major browsers, Opera 7+, Internet Explorer 5+, Firefox 0.8+, Netscape 6+, Mozilla 1.6 and IE derivative browsers. Mac users are also catered for -- with the above browsers, plus Safari and Camino.
How much faster?
Reports from various sources on the net indeed indicate an average of a 5x increase in dialup speeds and 3x for broadband. It seems to depend largely on what types of file you`re downloading too. OnSpeed state that they have special algorithms for compressing different types of files -- there are algorithms for MP3 files, Word documents, Flash files, and more. You can speed things up further still by reducing the quality of the graphical content in websites.
Privacy Implications
Because OnSpeed routes your traffic through its own servers, there are privacy implications. However, OnSpeed have a detailed privacy policy on their website, and they ensure that users` web browsing is kept anonymous and is not individually identified. Also, you can switch OnSpeed off for certain websites or domains if you need to -- this is quite simple and managed through the OnSpeed program itself.
Conclusion
OnSpeed is a very useful piece of software. Definitely recommended for those on dialup or on connections slower than 300kbps.
