So you have a big idea for an online business, you've burned the
midnight oil, planned it through and through, talked with your
colleagues and friends, and they agree - it sounds like the best idea
since sliced bread. Now you want to present your vision to the
world; you need a website to translate your plans into something
tangible. You load up your web design program, and stare at the blank
page in front of you. You have a million ideas for the web
design, but how best to implement it?
You have the following choices:
-
Do the web design work yourself/in-house.
-
Contract out the web design to a web design company.
The first option is what many companies opt for, especially if they are
operating on a tight budget. The perceived advantages are seen as:
-
Cost - Developing in-house could be considered "free" depending on how you want to cost your time.
-
Flexibility - Developing in-house you can customise your site to the last pixel - if you have the technical knowledge necessary.
However, the following should also be taken into account:
-
Time - Developing in-house potentially from scratch requires
considerable resource to get completed. Especially so if those in
charge of the development are not experienced in web design. It
is not unheard of for web design projects to drag on for many weeks,
even months.
- Quality - If the in-house web designer is not an expert the
results can look
unprofessional, and at worst amateurish. Also, the pages may not
be optimal for search engine rankings if the designer is not
skilled in SEO (search engine optimisation).
The second option; using a web design company is often seen as the only
way to achieve a professional, well-designed website for the following
reasons:
-
Delegation of work - Contracting out the web design leaves yourself and
your team free to concentrate on other things. Absolutely key
where your resources are required to carry out more business-oriented
activity.
-
Timeframe - web design is what these companies do, day-in, day-out, and
they know how to get websites speedily designed in the most efficient
manner. If your needs are well specified, and the web design
company is a good one, your website design could be up and running in
as little as a week.
However:
-
Cost - For a fairly simple design, you may be able to get a web design
company to create a site for a relatively small amount of money,
however, if your needs are more complex and require custom work on
interactive content; flash logos, flash introductions to your site,
etc. this is where your costs can become astronomical.
- Trust - Although fairly uncommon; in such a new industry as web design
there are some 'cowboy' web design companies that will exploit their
customers, delivering work late, not to specification, or even not
deliver it at all. There have even been cases of web design
companies trying to pass off others' work as their own, which can lead
to all kinds of legal trouble. If you are new to contracting out
web design work, it is best to be wary, as you are putting an important part of your business in others' hands.

So, we have the 'DIY' approach and the outsourced approach. Both
have their advantages and disadvantages, but which is best for your
company? Well, there is a "Third Way" -- an option that combines
the best of the in-house and outsourced methods, with all of the
benefits, and none of the disadvantages. It's a hybrid of the two
methods detailed above, with the customisation benefits of designing it
in house, with the professional look of a professionally designed
website - at a fraction of the cost!
'What is this miracle option?' I hear you cry. Well, it is a
relatively new idea, that most web design companies would rather you
didn't know about. Website templates!
The major advantage is price: You get a high quality design for as
little as £10-£35. You don't have to hire a web designer or web design
studio. Second advantage is time frame: It usually takes 5-15 days for
a good designer to produce a web page of such quality - templates are
available to be downloaded immediately.
